Water conservation and planting new greenery: Hodonín residents created a Climate Action Plan for Earth Day
Published: May 6, 2025 Reading time: 2 minutes Share: Share an articleHeat waves, prolonged droughts, flash floods, and tornadoes. When it comes to the impacts of climate change, the Hodonín region is one of the most vulnerable areas of the Czech Republic. We are working with town leadership to change how we look at the landscape, making it less susceptible to extreme weather events and a more pleasant place for locals. This year's Earth Day was celebrated by the council with the approval of a new Climate Action Plan.

Our environmental team has been working with five communities here since 2021, when a devastating tornado and flash flood hit the area.
"We are creating strategies and proposing measures to help prevent further disasters, mitigate their effects, and generally increase the area's resilience," says Roman Klecker, project coordinator from our Hodonín Community Support Centre for Climate Protection.
A big step for Hodonín - Climate Action Plan
One possible response is to create a climate action plan. Such plans are first discussed with the public, municipal departments, and city management. Proposals are then drawn up to reduce risks and make the city function sustainably in a changing climate by 2050, which is what the Hodonín City Council approved for Earth Day, 22 April 2025.
What the plan means for the city
Hodonín will now establish a special working group and the position of adaptation guarantor at the municipality to coordinate and ensure that all new municipal projects include adaptation and mitigation measures.
These include water conservation, planting and maintaining street greenery that helps cool the city on hot days, and sustainable and energy-efficient construction and renovation of new municipal buildings.
Other key measures include:
- Efficient and sustainable transport
- Accessible recreation and healthy landscapes
- Awareness raising and education
- Management
We have long worked with the Partnership Foundation's Adapterra team to support communities. In the spring of 2024, the first preparatory steps began, with inspirational public meetings, analytical work, data collection, and many field surveys and measurements. All this preceded this year's Earth Day.
However, progress does not end with the vote. The people of Hodonín can look forward to many innovations that will improve their lives during hot days and extreme weather fluctuations.
